Try to place your game in such a way, that they form large groups. Touching a group of 3 or more gems dissolves them and lets the current row of new gems fall. (and scores some points)
If there is no room for gems to fall down, their column will get locked (nothing more will fall down from this column). If 50% of the columns are locked, you lose.
This game is optimized for touch input, but you can also drag your mouse (with left button pressed). Swiping horizontally allows to move the row of new gems, swiping down lets the row falling down.
